Why You Can Still Get an STI Even If Your Partner’s a Virgin

Posted by on 3:52 am in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Why You Can Still Get an STI Even If Your Partner’s a Virgin

Think you’ve got no risk of contracting an STI because your new partner is a virgin? Think again. Though it may seem unlikely, it is possible that someone who says they’re a virgin could have an infection in their system that they could pass on to you. Here are 2 big reasons why you should never consider yourself safe from STIs without testing, even if your partner considers themselves a virgin. Non-Sexual Transmission The name ‘sexual transmitted infection’ implies just that — sexual transmission. However, many of these infections can be transmitted by other means too. For example, infections like oral herpes can be transmitted through something as simple as an infected mother kissing her child while she has a cold sore. Pubic lice (crabs), also commonly sexually transmitted, can be contracted by using the same damp towel as someone who has them. Likewise, even if your partner is a virgin, they may have contracted HIV from their mother (through birth or breastfeeding), from intravenous drug use, or from being tattooed or pierced with a used needle. All these illnesses can then be transmitted to you through sexual contact. Definition of ‘Virgin’ While your partner may say they’re a virgin, different people have different definitions of the word. For example, many people do not count oral sex as “real sex”, but STIs can still be transmitted this way. Someone women will use the ‘virgin’ label even if they’ve had anal sex, which is another way to contract an STI. Even when it comes to vaginal sex, it’s not uncommon for people to discard brief experiences they’ve had because they’re “too short to count”. In other cases, people are worried about being judged based on their sexual history, or they have a negative perception of their own experiences. This can lead them to omit facts from their sexual history, whether they intend to be deceptive or not. Sexual communication can be unclear at the best of times, so it’s important that you don’t take everything a new partner says at face value. Don’t be afraid to respectfully question them about what they mean by ‘virgin’.  So, even if your current partner says they’re a virgin, it’s always a good idea to protect yourself by using condoms or other latex barriers. When you and your partner feel comfortable, you should both contact a sexual health clinic to get tested for sexually transmittable illnesses. If your test results both come back clear, it will be relatively safe for you to discontinue using latex protection, though you should still use birth control if you’re not ready for children. Remember that you and your partner will need to be retested if either of you have a sexual partnership with someone new during the course of your...

What to do after having a root canal performed

Posted by on 2:44 am in Uncategorized | Comments Off on What to do after having a root canal performed

When you have a root canal, the endodontist removes infected pulp and tissue from the tooth canal. This is necessary when you have a deep infection in the tooth that is too deep for a standard filling. While this is a routine procedure, it helps to know what to expect if this will be your first time having it done. Here are some things to expect after you have the root canal performed. Stick to Soft Foods For a Few Days Your endodontist will be able to provide more detailed instructions, but in general, you should be careful what you eat around the tooth. Try to stick to a liquid or soft foods diet right after you return home from the dentist. Chew on the opposite side of your mouth as much as you can so you don’t disturb the tooth. While there will be a temporary filling in the tooth, the tooth is now fragile and prone to breaking. Make sure you don’t chew anything hard, crunchy, or chewy with that tooth. Keep the Area Clean As with all dental procedures, keeping your mouth clean and practicing good oral hygiene is essential. It will heal better with regular brushing and flossing of your teeth. For the first day or so, you might want to be careful with flossing around the tooth that had the root canal since the gums might be inflamed. However, before too long, you will be flossing just like you normally would. Just be careful not to disturb the temporary filling material inside the tooth. Return to the Dentist As Directed The endodontist will likely inform you that you need to return to your regular dentist within a few weeks after the root canal. The dentist will perform an x-ray to make sure no more infected tissue is present and will check the condition of the tooth. If it is healing nicely and there aren’t any obvious issues with it, you will then have the tooth prepared for the crown. This includes filing down the tooth slightly in order to make room for the crown, then having impressions made. You will probably wear a temporary crown over the tooth until the permanent comes back from the lab. You then return to the dentist once more to have the permanent crown bonded to your tooth. After having a root canal, make sure you don’t forego getting the crown. With no pulp left, the tooth is now considered a dead tooth. This means it is highly susceptible to damage and cracking, but a crown will protect it.  For more information about what to expect as part of the root canal process, contact a company like the Dental Smile...

Options for acupuncture if you are scared of needles

Posted by on 11:00 am in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Options for acupuncture if you are scared of needles

Many people are intrigued by the idea of acupuncture but don’t like the thought of needles. Luckily, this doesn’t have to stop you from enjoying the benefits of acupuncture. Read on to learn more.  Do some research Many people who are scared of needles picture that they will be stabbed with thick and painful needles. Acupuncture needles are incredibly fine and can often barely be felt as they enter the body. Many patients find that their anxiety reduces after they speak to an acupuncturist and see the needles that would usually be inserted during treatment. It can also be useful to head online and watch some acupuncture treatments or listen to interviews with people who have used the treatment as this can help motivate you.  Speak to an acupuncturist Many acupuncturists are used to dealing with patients with some level of fear of needles. They can help to discuss the treatment with you and make some suggestions that may make you more comfortable. Having a good rapport with your acupuncturist can be a great way to help relieve fear and tension around the treatment. They can also commence treatments slowly so that you can ask them to stop if you do have any discomfort, which can give you a feeling or more control over the process.  Use a different term If the term ‘needles’ brings a response just because you have bad associations with it, you can try using another term such as pins or sticks. Many people that have a visceral reaction to the word needles find that if they use a different word, much of the tension is gone. Most acupuncturists are open to using different terms if you ask them to.  Try acupressure Many similar benefits to acupuncture can be achieved by acupressure, where a massage therapist provides a deep stimulation at the point that the acupuncture needle would usually penetrate. This triggers the body to release the pain management chemicals that are released during acupuncture as well as helping to release tension and pressure in these points. Many acupuncturists offer this as an adjunct treatment to support acupuncture or can suggest a local masseuse who is skilled in the technique.  There is no reason to avoid acupuncture just because you have anxiety around needles. Finding the right therapist will help you work through these issues so that you too can explore the benefits of this...

Questions to Ask Your Doctor the Next Time You Visit a Medical Center

Posted by on 3:44 am in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Questions to Ask Your Doctor the Next Time You Visit a Medical Center

If you have an appointment scheduled with your doctor, it’s good to ensure you take the time to ask questions about your health and especially about any condition you might have in particular. Maintaining a good dialogue with your doctor can mean knowing how to protect your health in between those medical centre visits. Note a few questions that many patients overlook but which you’ll want to bring up with your doctor the next time you have an appointment. 1. Ask what would happen if you didn’t get certain treatments Doctors often assume that you want to get any and all treatments available for your condition or for your health in general, but this isn’t always the case. You never want to overlook or ignore their advice or assume you can find better advice online, but you also need to be in full charge of your health. A doctor may tell you that there is a good chance that your body might heal from a certain virus or you may have certain symptoms that simply pass in time, like getting the flu and allowing it to just run its course. Be sure you know the risks involved with overlooking certain treatments, but don’t assume that medication and such are always going to be necessary. 2. Ask what you can do to improve your overall health or a certain condition yourself Doctors may not always give this advice to patients because many patients simply don’t want to change their diet and lifestyle in order to improve their health or even fight a certain condition. However, if you’re willing to make those changes, ask your doctor about what you can do on your own. This might include cutting out certain foods, doing certain exercises, investing in an air filter or other such apparatus, and the like. Let your doctor know you’re willing to work with him or her to improve your health and your condition so you can get those personalized recommendations. 3. Ask about the purpose of certain tests Your doctor may prescribe tests to find out why you’re having certain symptoms, but some tests are merely to check on your overall health condition. If tests are being run because of your symptoms, ask the doctor what happens when the test results come back; will you need further testing, or will this tell him or her how to treat you? This can let you know if you’ll understand your health condition with this one test or if you’ll still need to wait for an answer, and if there is anything you need to do to prepare for additional testing....

Why It May Be Unwise to Listen to Friends When Choosing Hearing Aids

Posted by on 4:31 am in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Why It May Be Unwise to Listen to Friends When Choosing Hearing Aids

Many people who have suffered from some form of hearing loss consult friends in order to know which kind of hearing aids they should get. However, this approach may be counterproductive because it may not address your specific needs. This article discusses some of the specific issues that should be considered when selecting hearing aids. Lifestyle Differences Before hearing aids are prescribed, professionals assess your lifestyle so that they can identify the environments in which you experience hearing challenges, such as when watching TV or when you are chatting with friends. That analysis helps the professional to give you the best hearing aids that are suitable for your hearing challenges. Consequently, you may end up with hearing aids that are different from what a friend had recommended. Sound Quality Audiology experts do their best to ensure that the hearing aids that you receive produce high quality sounds that are optimised (on matters such as volume and sound clarity) based on the size of your ear canal and the type of hearing aids that you have selected. This means that two individuals with the same kind of hearing loss may end up with different hearing aids because it may be hard for the same kind of hearing aid to deliver optimal performance for people with differing sizes of ear canals. Physical Fit A hearing aid that is not fitting properly may fall out of your ear. It can also whistle, or it may hurt you each time that you wear it. It is, therefore, very important for you to get hearing aids that fit well. The technician will ask you to try on several hearing aids before you select the ones that you feel are comfortable to wear. Thus, you are likely to end up with different hearing aids from what your friend has because a different set offered you the greatest degree of comfort. As you can see, many factors must be considered before a set of hearing aids is selected. The primary concern is to find out which set is best suited to the specific hearing problem that you have. Once that is settled, the professional ensures that you will be comfortable as you use those hearing aids. This is because comfort is important if you are to be motivated to use those hearing aids consistently. It is therefore very important for you to choose a hearing aid professional carefully so that you receive a set of hearing aids that is the most appropriate for your...

What Can You Do When Your Dog Has an Upset Stomach?

Posted by on 6:26 am in Uncategorized | Comments Off on What Can You Do When Your Dog Has an Upset Stomach?

As anybody with a pet dog can affirm, a pooch can soon become part of the family. As a result, you want to make sure that you give your pup the very best life. This means feeding him the best possible diet, making sure that he gets enough exercise on a regular basis, giving loving attention, and ensuring that any health issues are cleared up sooner rather than later. Just like humans, dogs can experience stomach upsets. But when your pooch is feeling poorly because of a stomach problem, what can you actually do about it? Assess the symptoms. You can figure out how severe your dog’s stomach upset is by assessing some of the most common symptoms. If there is a little vomiting and diarrhoea and nothing else, this probably isn’t something so serious, but there are some symptoms that indicate that a visit to your local vet is necessary. If your dog is experiencing notable bloat, this is a reason to take him to the vet immediately, as this could point towards the ingestion of something poisonous. You should also lean on the talents of vet services if you spot blood in vomit or in faeces. Fasting. It might seem cruel, but if your dog is experiencing stomach upset, the last thing that he needs is more food irritating the lining of his stomach. Fast your dog for 12 to 24 hours, just allowing him to drink as much water as he wants. This will give him enough time for his intestinal system to cleanse itself. After the fast, keep your dog’s diet simple and natural. Some unflavoured boiled chicken mixed in with white boiled rice would do the trick. Probiotics. If your dog’s stomach problems are something that go away and then come back again, you may want to introduce some friendly bacteria to his diet that will create a more stable environment in his stomach so that stomach problems are less likely to occur. There are many varieties of probiotics for dogs in the marketplace. Ask your vet for a recommendation of the best probiotics for your dog’s particular health issues. Imodium could work. If you think this is a temporary attack of diarrhoea, you can actually use over the counter Imodium to ease his symptoms. If you have a small dog, be careful about giving your dog too much. You might want to try the Imodium tablets for children, but it’s still advisable to contact your vet before giving your dog medication of any kind. If you still have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact local vet...

Alternatives to the CPAP Machine When Treating Sleep Apnoea

Posted by on 8:04 am in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Alternatives to the CPAP Machine When Treating Sleep Apnoea

Sometimes the most obvious solution is the best one. When looking at sleep apnoea solutions, your doctor will probably consider the suitability of a continuous positive airway pressure machine (CPAP). The machine has an air pressure regulator connected to a mask which fits over your nose and mouth (or sometimes only your nose depending on the severity of the condition). This regulates the air pressure in your throat, preventing the walls of your throat from closing during sleep, allowing you to breathe properly. Not everyone is a suitable candidate for a CPAP machine. While it operates discreetly, it still makes a small amount of noise, rendering it less-than-perfect for light sleepers. It can also be difficult to get used to sleeping with a breathing apparatus attached to your face. If you would prefer not to use a CPAP machine, or if your doctor feels that this is not the best solution in your case, what are some of the other available options? Weight Loss Your doctor might suggest weight loss as a method for treating your sleep apnoea. There’s around a 20% increased chance of sleep apnoea in individuals who are obese. Being obese adds a lot of stress to your body,  which can result in reduced respiratory function. Weight loss is perhaps the best long-term solution and once your weight has been reduced, you might find that your sleep apnoea disappears with no further intervention. Reducing your alcohol consumption can also be highly beneficial. Alcohol is a relaxant, and if the walls of your throat are already prone to closure during sleep, having this relaxant at work in your body can make this closure more likely to occur. Sleeping Position Sleeping on your side essentially rotates your head by around 90 degrees. In some people, this rotation prevents the walls of your throat from closing during sleep, thus keeping your upper airway clear. It’s not so straightforward to alter your sleeping position if you generally sleep on your back. There are a number of ways to train yourself to sleep on your side, but the quickest and easiest way can be to invest in a full-length body pillow. This is a pillow that you sleep alongside and essentially cuddle with while you sleep. It can result in a comfortable sleep (on your side), but might not be appropriate as there needs to be sufficient room in your bed, especially if you already share your bed with your partner. Breathing Exercises The circular breathing technique can strengthen your upper airway, which can go a long way towards preventing the walls of your throat from closing during sleep. It’s an exercise that you can teach yourself, and is generally used by musicians who play the tuba, the trumpet, or the saxophone. If you want to also use your new circular breathing activities to play an instrument (as well as reducing the likelihood of sleep apnoea), you can try learning the didgeridoo, as this instrument is virtually impossible to play without circular breathing. Sometimes the CPAP machine is the best option when treating sleep apnoea, but it’s good to know that there are other sleep apnoea solutions...

4 Signs Your Relative Needs Nursing Care

Posted by on 2:01 pm in Uncategorized | Comments Off on 4 Signs Your Relative Needs Nursing Care

Nursing care allows seniors to have around-the-clock medical care in addition to regular supervision and help with things like bathing and toileting. However, it can be hard knowing when it is time to get nursing care in the home or in a nursing home. Here are some signs to look for when you think your relative might be in need of nursing care. They Are Starting to Wander The first sign that your relative needs to go to a nursing home is if they are starting to wander. This is often a sign that they have either Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Both conditions make it unsafe for your relative to be on their own. Not only can they wander and get into unsafe conditions or get lost, but these conditions make it difficult for them to remember to shower, eat, and take their important medications. Your Relative Has Had Recent Accidents While the occasional accident might be normal for everyone, having a loved one that is older and is getting injured frequently, that can be a red flag. Even if your relative has not ended up in the hospital due to a severe injury, look at their body for signs of bruises, cuts, or scrapes. They might be ignoring these minor injuries. It is also possible that your relative is bumping into walls or objects, or having falls, and not remembering how it occurred. If you ask your grandmother how her arm got the bad bruise on it, and she doesn’t seem to recall, it can be another sign that she is in need of nursing care. Signs of Inadequate Daily Activities There are a number of daily activities that your relative might be having difficulty keeping up with. For example, your grandfather might have soiled clothing and look as if he has not showered in several days. This could be a sign that he is either unable to keep up with laundry and personal hygiene, or that he is forgetting about these tasks. You may also notice signs that he can’t keep up with regular housekeeping, such as having piles of laundry, dishes in the sink, spills on the floors, or stacks of newspaper in the living room. They Are Angry or Aggressive Nursing care or at-home care might be needed if your relative is showing signs of aggression. The reason is because this could also be a symptom of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. It is very difficult to deal with memory problems or focusing issues, which are signs of these conditions. Your relative might know they know you, but don’t remember your name, and become frustrated with themselves. Having an older relative who is verbally or physically aggressive is a good reason to consider around-the-clock care in their home. Contact local in-home health care centers or nursing care facilities to learn more about your home care...

Makeup Tips and Application Strategies for After Your Eyelid Surgery

Posted by on 11:33 am in Uncategorized | Comments Off on Makeup Tips and Application Strategies for After Your Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgeries are designed to make you look younger, and after a surgery, you may be wondering what you should do with your makeup routine. When can you start wearing makeup again? Should you wear the same makeup or invest in a new look? If you’ve got questions like that, here are some makeup tips to guide you in the days, weeks and months following your surgery: 1. Follow doctor’s orders. After your eyelid lift, your doctor should advise you how long to wait before you wear makeup. Be sure to heed their advice, and don’t wear makeup before the skin around your eye is healed. You don’t want to risk getting makeup in open wounds as they are trying to heal. 2. Play with contrasts to cover the bruising. Once the incisions from your eyelid surgery have healed and you are ready to start wearing makeup again, you may still have some bruising. If you want to hide it, you need to play with contrasting colours. For example, if your eyes are red and puffy, you should offset the red with green-toned concealers, as green is opposite red on the colour wheel. Similarly, if your bruises are purple, you want a yellow-tinted concealer to hide them. 3. Start with fresh makeup for your new eyes. To find the right concealer for your bruised eye, you may want to go shopping, and while you’re out, consider replacing all of your makeup. Overtime, bacteria can build up in mascaras, eye shadows and other types of eye makeup, and rather than letting these germs migrate to your newly shaped eyelids, consider replacing your makeup with new stuff. 4. Enhance your new look by opening up your eyes. While you’re shopping for new makeup, look for items that will enhance the newly youthful look of your eyes and eyelids. For example, glittery eye shadow helps make eyes look more open by lightening and brightening them, and it’s the perfect compliment to an eyelid lift. Also, look for dramatic mascara that will lengthen, lift and thicken your eyelashes. Now, that your eyelids have been lifted, it’s the perfect time to let your eye lashes shine and really frame your beautiful eyes.   If you don’t have one already, also grab an eyelash curler. Use it on your top lashes to lift them away from your eyes and enhance the youthful look that has been created by your eyelid surgery....

How to prepare for a doctor’s appointment

Posted by on 8:52 am in Uncategorized | Comments Off on How to prepare for a doctor’s appointment

Going to the doctor’s is something everybody has to do every once in a while. However, with many people, this is something they tend to worry about. That is why you, regardless if it’s an annual check-up or an appointment you’ve made because you’re concerned with something, should take some time to prepare yourself for your visit. Preparing for your doctor’s appointment will make you more effective when you’re in there to make sure that all of your concerns are addressed, it also decreases the risk of being a subject of the wrong treatment. Make the call When booking an appointment at the doctor’s over the phone, you should briefly describe the reason for your visit, so that they can make sure that your appointment is scheduled to be long enough. If you’re in a hurry, you should also ask for an appointment early in the morning, as this will reduce your waiting time since the doctor won’t be seeing any other patients before you and will therefore not be busy. If you’re getting the answer that there are no more appointments available for some time, you should also ask them to put you on a waiting list. This means that they will call you as soon as they have a free appointment. This might mean that you’ll have to go there at random times of the day, but it will make you get there faster than just waiting. Make a list The first thing you should do when preparing for a doctor’s visit is to write a list about your concerns. Rank them so that the most urgent or important once are on top. This will make you remember everything that you might have thought of at home but that doesn’t seem as important when you’re at the practice. If you’re going to the doctor’s to seek help about a certain concern, you should also make sure to write down all the symptoms you might have. This is important so you are at no risk of forgetting a symptom, which can help the doctor exclude some possibilities about your health. Bring medical records and medicines If you’re visiting a new doctor, you should also make sure to bring your medical records with you. These are usually available to the doctor online, but bringing them with you might be an extra precaution in case there is something wrong with the connection or if the doctor hasn’t had time to bring your records. You should also bring with you any medication you might be taking, as this can help the doctor exclude possible reasons to why you’re feeling a certain way, and it will also help them decide what treatment that would be most appropriate for you. Spending a little time in preparation for your appointment with the doctor can help make the appointment even more effective in ensuring that your questions are answered and you get any treatment you may...
